JERSEY 2019 - The Re Union!!
last weekend we flew to Jersey with group of our Nordic Walkers form London - the weather was amazing, the views, the people, the food - I could go on and on!! Just to say a brilliant time was had by all.
Staying in the Royal Yacht Hotel in St Helier we were central to everything, the excellent and in expensive bus route around the Island takes you to all places, we had a mixture of Nordic Walks, cliff paths, beaches, woodland and countryside.
Jersey is on our Nordic Walking Visitors shelf and we will be planning a return in 2020, well done to our all - 33 degrees of heat on both days made it a little different, but the planned routes were all completed…Only as Nordic Walkers Can!!

It was gr8 Nordic Walking weather as we set off on our Adventure walk 02.19 – this route takes us to an area of Bodmin which id steeped in history, unlike Dartmoor which was inhabited many years previous, Bodmin’s mines were still going into the late 18th century and many pumping houses still remain in and around Minions.
Starting at the Heritage Centre car park we headed north along what has to be one of the best roads/track fo walking in Cornwall, we pass th every last mine built on Bodmin heading out towards Henwood. As we warm up the layers come off and we head uphill to sharps tor farm, passing small cottages once inhabited by quarry men and their families, a few seconds of deliberation sees us heading up to Shop Tor, and at the spoint you wonder where the rest of the world has gone, no one else around, it suits Nordic Walkers that the holiday makers head for the coast! At the summit of Sharp Tor, the view is amazing, Dartmoor to the east, deepest Cornwall to the south west, we even get a glimpse of the sw approaches and the land descending towards Plymouth. Then the layers cam back on as rain descended, temperature dropped, but good humour maintained! We could see how lucky we were as only a mile or so north all hell was coming down in sheets of rain through the valley.
As we descended the rain eased, off cam the layers and we zig zagged our way up Stowe hill, towards the cheesewring, clambering over a wall of rocks at the top, said to be an ancient fortification locals say a boundary marker, let the imagination say the former as it sounds more exciting!
Views form the cheeswring are also amazing, however we come across civilisation as the route form the Hurlers is a popular family walk and not difficult .
Cheesewrings name comes from th shape of the stones being similar to those used in the making of cider where they crush the apple ‘cheese’
Our descent takes us past the path skirting the quarry, down through the Hurlers which are a circle of stones which were humans – turned to stone because they played the sport of hurling on the sabbath – imagination again is better with folklore, The heritage centre at Minions is still closed, the only disappointment of the route, after spotting the Minion Characters we have a well earned cuppa in the local tea shop – only because we couldn’t get in the Cheesewring
8 k – 2.5 hrs a gr8 nordic walk and recommended!
